the jobs report. only 69,000 jobs were added in may. president obama said it is time for congress to act on bills to move the economy forward. >> right now, congress should pass to prevent lay offs so we can put teavers and firefighters and police officers on the job. >> senator corzine of texas said democrats are promoting gimmicks. >> january will bring us the largest tax increase in history. and it is roughly 500 billion. that tax increase could push the united states back in a recession . from the politics of this and the people actually living with unemployment particularly in california and putting people in a desperate position some states, the number of workers seeking unemployment

ben tit system going down. whatever the reason for that. unemployment in california is at 11 percent a three year low that prompted the government to cut off long-term benefits and leaving one million people who depend on the safety net with something nothing. job numbers are discouraging to say the least for our nation's chronically unemployed. they have been without a job for more than six months now . only adding insult to injury, a lot of people's checks will be running out soon. back in 2009, feds added emergency extensions to state unemployment benefits . that gave people weeks of unemployment and 73 from the feds and the extensions expired in february. and congress reauthorized a deal to keep them going.

they had to kit back on the number of weeks people were eligible for. >> there are so many people out of the work, and a majority of people are trying hard to find jobs. and they are putting in the job it takes to do that and sometimes we need more time. >> and now the emergency benefits will still give you something depending on where you live. the state's unemployment rate fell in 2009, so did the number of extended weeks. here in california, the rate is very high. and so the feds reduced the golden state's benefits by 20 weeks . similar things are happening in 24 other states so far and translates to 400,000 people who are cut off. these folks are the first major casulties of a law that was enacted in february .

it was a good law in many ways and but it impacted high unemployment states, that is going to be felt now and they are on the front lines. the law predicts that half of unemployed americans will no lorning be eligible for benefits by the end of this year, harris. >> we see the numbers, casey. the true picture of unemployment is bigger than what it is. you ask the question of what happened to people outside of california and where the benefits are going to end zoon? >> you are rightt. six states and dcc will lose benefits this summer and then by next year, extension for everyone in all states will end unless congress decides to reenact and extend the benefits again . we know that with the increase of the unemployment numbers, there are a lot of americans that are desperate for assistance. >> we know that the numbers
